3 Signs It's Time for New Tires
Tires are an important part of your vehicle and have a significant impact on how it functions. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 20% to 30% of a vehicle’s fuel consumption and 24% of road vehicle CO2 emissions are tire-related. Failing to replace your tires could just cost you more money in the long run. Take a look at these tips, so you can determine if it's time for new tires.
1. They Fail the Quarter Test
When your tread begins to wear down too far, your tires are no longer safe. To check to see if you still have a good tread, try the quarter test. Simply push a quarter into the tire with George Washington's head facing inward. If you're no longer able to see his head once the quarter is inserted, your tread's in good shape. If you can see part of his head, it's time to get your tires checked.
2. You Keep Losing Air Pressure
While wear and tear on your treads are fairly easy to spot, there are other tire issues that can be more difficult to detect. A loss of tire pressure is one of them. Your tires shouldn't need air very often, so if you're constantly refilling them, it's usually a sign of a problem. You might have a puncture or a slow leak. When you're constantly losing air pressure in one or more of your tires, stop by your local tire store to have them checked.
3. You've Had Them Longer Than Five Years
No matter how much or how little you drive, your tires won't last forever. In our experience, if you've had a set of tires for five years or more, they need to be replaced. Your tires provide a barrier between your vehicle and the road and are important for your safety. In many instances, you'll start to notice more problems arising the closer it gets to the five-year mark. There are some situations where repairs can be made, but once you begin to have issues with your older tires, it's often best to get new tires.
